Chick-Fil-A is kind of gross, and I am not even talking about their politics.

I won’t go too far into the whole Chick-Fil-A debate, because although I am a lawyer who majored in political science, this is not a politics weblog.  I support the general concept of a boycott when any group wants to call attention to an issue or make a point.  We the people can vote in our elections of public officials, but we can also vote with our feet and our pocketbooks/wallets.

As for all the people who have flocked to Chick-Fil-A, they’re also entitled to their opinion, but they should keep in mind that they’re getting more than a simple chicken sandwich.  Here are the ingredients in a Chick-Fil-A sandwich (taken directly from the Chick-Fil-A website),  but with my emphasis added in bold/underline:

Chicken (100% natural whole breast filet, seasoning [salt, monosodiumglutamate, sugar, spices, paprika], seasoned coater [enriched bleached flour {bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid}, sugar, salt, monosodium glutamate, nonfat milk, leavening {baking soda, sodium aluminum phosphate, monocalcium phosphate}, spice, soybean oil, color {paprika}], milk wash [water, whole powdered egg and nonfat milk solids], peanut oil [fully refined peanut oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness and dimethylpolysiloxane an anti-foaming agent added]), bun (enriched flour [wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate {Vitamin B1}, riboflavin {Vitamin B2}, folic acid], water, high fructose corn syrup, yeast, contains 2% or less of each of the following: liquid yeast, soybean oil, nonfat milk, salt, wheat gluten, soy flour, dough conditioners [may contain one or more of the following: mono- and diglycerides, calcium and sodium stearoyl lactylates, calcium peroxide], soy flour, amylase, yeast nutrients [monocalcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, ammonium sulfate], calcium propionate added to retard spoilage, soy lecithin, cornstarch, butter oil [soybean oil, palm kernel oil, soy lecithin, natural and artificial flavor, TBHQ and citric acid added as preservatives, and artificial color]), pickle (cucumbers, water, vinegar, salt, lactic acid, calcium chloride, alum, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate [preservatives], natural flavors, polysorbate 80, yellow 5, blue 1).

Some thoughts about this impressively lengthy list:  1)  Note that we have salt, MSG, and sugar before we even GET to the breading!  That’s not “chicken”;  2)  The breading contains sugar, and MSG;  3)   The bun contains high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavor, soy, and other things with chemical names that may be harmless or may be nefarious (I am too lazy to Google them, but be my guest, and let me know what you find out); 4)   “Anti-foaming agent” and “butter oil” just sound gross. Also, is it so hard to use “butter”? It looks like the butter oil contains no actual butter, and instead is soy-based; and 5) If the food ingredients contains numbers (blue 1, yellow 5), maybe it’s best to avoid them.

Even if I ignore the politics, this is not the place for me to eat.
